GRANITE CITY — From the start, the Belleville West soccer team was in control of Friday's Class 3A regional championship game at Gene Baker Field. But despite the Maroons' strong play and multiple scoring chances, the game was scoreless at the half.

Maybe it just wasn't the Maroons' night.

"You always have to think about that in postseason play,'' Belleville West coach Jason Mathenia said. "Any coach who's been around for any amount of time knows that anything can happen on any given night, especially when you get into the postseason. We were very pleased with our performance in that first half. We just felt that it was going to take one."
